I've always loved touching people with my creations. Whether it's a painting, a photograph, or a handmade card, throughout my life I've used art as a way to reach out to friends and family. When I get a call from one of my clients who has just watched their wedding video, and I hear the excitement, the appreciation, and the emotion in their voices, I feel wonderful.
My career in weddings began when I was in high school. I photographed some of my friends and families' weddings, and quickly learned what a unique gift it is to give someone a beautiful photograph of a special moment, or to capture a glance between two people that says more than any words could. From there, I went on to art school to study photography, but after taking a class in video, I fell in love, and have never looked back.
With video, I've found the most powerful way to affect people's emotions. Video not only captures moving images, but actual sounds; the nervous energy in the room while a bride is getting ready, her father telling her how beautiful she looks, the groom's voice cracking during the vows, and the laughter and excitement during your reception.
When I moved to New York City in 2001, the first two weddings that I worked on were Darcy Miller's (Editor, Martha Stewart Weddings), and Jung Lee's (co-owner of Fete). Talk about jumping right into the world of New York City weddings! Since then I have forged successful relationships with many of the city's top wedding professionals, helping to capture some of the most memorable weddings in the New York City area and beyond.
My goal is to turn the typical idea of wedding videography completely on it's head. We've all seen the cheesy wedding video and the annoying videographer making a nuisance at a wedding, and that is exactly what I am NOT going to do at your wedding!
During a wedding, I walk the fine line of being invisible, while also being exactly where I need to be to capture each moment as it happens. I pay close attention to where I am, who is around me, and whether I am or standing out too much. But at the same time, I am zooming in on all the action and the subtle events that I know are important to a bride and groom, capturing them with technical mastery and creativity.
I use small cameras which shoot exceptionally well in low lighting conditions, and never use a light unless it is absolutely necessary to maintain great quality. And even then, it's pretty minimal. When it comes to sound, I am obsessive. For the ceremony I use a wireless lapel mic on the groom so I can hear everything going on (especially your vows), and for the reception, I make sure I get perfect audio from your band or dj so that the toasts and music are crystal clear.
After your wedding the editing process begins, and this is where most of the magic happens. Through the use of black and white and sepia tones, as well as film effects and other stylized cropping, I will create a visually beautiful and emotionally charged film that you will want to watch over and over again. I've already paid attention to the choices you made for decor, color schemes, dresses, music, locations and food; I have learned who the most special people in your life are and with all that knowledge, I will recreate your day in a way that reflects who you are, and what is most important to you. I stay true to your intentions by bringing out the atmosphere you've created and give the video the same energy that was actually happening during the different parts of your day. With the addition of a soundtrack that is made up of your favorite music, your story will be told in a way that feels right for you.
